Esther Shearer

Esther_Shearer STEM grandma

Elisa Shearer, a social media intern at the American Association of University Women (AAUW) submitted this post about her mom, Esther.

My mom’s a STEM grandma! She got her associate’s degree in chemistry and worked in various laboratories before she had children. She tested drugs for FDA approval, did water quality tests for the Environmental Protection Agency at Norwich Eaton Pharmaceuticals (which eventually became a subsidiary of Proctor & Gamble), and worked with animals in a lab developing vaccines. She stayed at home when her children were born, but to this day she’ll explain the chemical interactions happening when we’re baking or taking medicine or painting or…basically everything. She’s the smartest woman I know.
